MLK Day: “A Change Is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke

Today we celebrate the birth and life of an American hero, Martin Luther King, Jr.  I can think of no better way to do so than by posting one of the greatest accomplishments in American music, “A Change Is Gonna Come,” by Sam Cooke.

I could write an essay about the magnificence of this song, but right now I just want to listen to it, so without further comment, here it is:

One Response to MLK Day: “A Change Is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke

  1. Jason Austinite says:

Easily Sam Cooke’s crowning achievement, and easily one of the greatest songs in the history of popular music. Hard to believe that the man who was largely known for bubble gum hits like “Cupid,” “Another Saturday Night,” “Wonderful World,” etc. would be able to come up with something this extraordinary. All of the aforementioned were great pop songs, to be sure, but “A Change Is Gonna Come” is on a whole different level. Groundbreaking, revolutionary, transformative… adjectives fail me. Luckily, the song speaks for itself.

What a loss at only 33 years of age. It’s highly doubtful that Cooke could have ever topped this, but I would have loved to have the opportunity to hear him try.
