News outlets are reporting that Jerry Reed passed away yesterday due to complications from emphysema. Jerry was a hell of a guitar picker and songwriter, but he’s perhaps better known by kids of my generation as the truck driver from Smokey and the Bandit or the asshole coach from Adam Sandler’s The Waterboy.
Reed was an accomplished guitar player and songwriter, and his songs were recorded by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and many others before embarking on his own successful solo career. Below is a video of one of his best known hits, “When You’re Hot, You’re Hot”.
And here’s my fondest childhood memory of Mr. Reed. RIP, funny Guitar Man.
