Album Review: …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead – Source Tags & Codes

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead--Source Tags & CodesOK, I’m just going to call them Trail of Dead, because the rest of the name with the ellipses and whatnot is too much typing.

As many citizens of Austin can attest, Trail of Dead are an absolutely terrific live band. I haven’t listened to everything they’ve ever done, but I’ve listened to enough to realize that they’ve sometimes had a hard time capturing their live sound in the studio. Not on Source Tags & Codes, which is likely why it’s their best-selling album to date.

My favorite Trail of Dead songs feature a fantastic droning wall of guitar with a great melody bubbling just under the surface. Probably the song that got some airplay, “Another Morning Stoner,” is the most immediately accessible example of this, but there are plenty of others here. That song is a pretty good litmus test for this album–if you like it, chances are you’ll like the whole thing.

If you ever get a chance to see them live, jump on it. In the meantime, buy this record.

And on the off chance someone from Trail of Dead reads this, how about a live album?

Here’s “Another Morning Stoner”:
